DUI Arrest Rates Fall

In January of this year, the Costa Mesa Police Department disbanded its specialized DUI enforcement team because of staff reductions in its traffic department. For more than twenty years, the specialized DUI enforcement team had been responsible for the majority of DUI arrests in Costa Mesa.

According to the Costa Mesa Police Department, statistics show an almost 50% drop in DUI arrests since the special enforcement unit was disbanded. This strongly suggests that DUI enforcement in the area has suffered significantly as a result of the personnel cuts in January. The department, like many others across the state, is seeking grant money to help pay for extra traffic enforcement.

The trend in law enforcement has been towards specialized DUI enforcement teams and saturation patrols to maximize DUI arrests. This depends on adequate funding by state and federal governments.
